What Were Marine Reptiles?
Marine reptiles were reptiles that lived in the sea – and they were not dinosaurs! Their ancestors lived on land and only later returned to the water. The three best-known groups are ichthyosaurs (they looked like dolphins), plesiosaurs (with flippers and often long necks), and mosasaurs (giant relatives of monitor lizards). Unlike fish, they didn’t have gills – they breathed air and had to come up to the surface. Many of them gave birth to live babies in the water.
