Fun Facts About Pterodactylus
Pterodactylus was a small pterosaur – which means it was not a dinosaur. In fact, it was the very first pterosaur scientists ever learned about: its fossil was found in the 1700s in Bavaria, Germany, in the famous quarries near Solnhofen. At first, nobody knew what kind of animal it was – some even thought it lived in the sea! Its name means “wing finger.” It lived in the late Jurassic period, about 150 million years ago, with a wingspan of around 3 feet. People often use “pterodactyl” for all pterosaurs, but that’s not quite right.
