Fun Facts About Elasmosaurus
Elasmosaurus was a plesiosaur – a marine reptile, not a dinosaur. It lived in the late Cretaceous period, about 80 million years ago, in a sea that once ran right through North America. It grew about 34 feet long – and around 23 feet of that was neck! That neck had more than 70 bones, more than almost any other animal. Here’s a funny story: the scientist who described it in 1868 first put the head on the wrong end – the tail! It ate fish and had to come up to breathe.
