Were There Butterflies When Stegosaurus Lived?
True butterflies like the ones we know probably didn’t exist yet when Stegosaurus lived in the late Jurassic period. But there were insects that looked amazingly similar: kalligrammatids. They were relatives of lacewings with big, patterned wings – some even had eyespots – so they’re sometimes called the “butterflies of the Jurassic.” Stegosaurus itself lived about 155 to 150 million years ago in western North America and was a plant-eater. It’s even the official state fossil of Colorado!
Fun Ideas for Your Finished Page
Make a paper butterfly: dab paint on one half, fold it closed, and open it up to a mirrored pattern! Glue it next to your Stegosaurus. Or make up a story about the friendship between the dino and the butterfly.
