Fun Facts About Giganotosaurus
The name Giganotosaurus means “giant southern lizard.” It lived in the Cretaceous period, about 98 million years ago, in what is now Argentina. It was discovered in 1993 by an amateur fossil hunter. At roughly 40 to 43 feet long, it was about as long as T-Rex and ranks among the largest meat-eaters ever to walk on land. The two never met, though: Giganotosaurus lived about 30 million years earlier and on a different continent.
