What's in the PDFs

There are two separate 2-page PDFs: the color version and the coloring version. Page 1 has the large corn cob with a front and back (just under 4 inches tall), page 2 has four mini corn cobs (about 1.5 inches tall), each with its own back. The back shows the husk from behind with the kernel tip peeking out on top.

Page 2: Mini corn cobs
Four little corn cobs, each as a front-and-back pair.

How to make the corn cob

1
Print at 100% (actual size); on the coloring page, make the kernels yellow and the leaves green.
2
Cut out front and back with the white border, slowing down at the leaf tips.
3
Cover the cob and the green back with wide packing tape or laminate them.
4
Stack them, tape all around and leave about 1 inch open at the stem on the bottom.
5
Stuff with fiberfill and tape the stem opening shut.

Safety: Stuffing, tape and small parts are not for children under 3.

๐Ÿ’ก Tips

  • Kernels look extra round if each one gets a little orange shadow at the bottom.
  • Give the pointy leaf tips an extra bit of tape so they don't bend.
  • Fiberfill and tape aren't for kids under 3.
  • For a play store, make several minis and pile them in a little basket.

What kids practice

Coloring all those kernels builds patience and fine pencil control. Add a bit of field knowledge: corn grows on tall plants, and the cobs sit inside husk leaves that protect them. On the farm, animals eat corn, too.

๐Ÿ”„ Variations & Ideas

Rainbow corn
Color the coloring version with red, blue and yellow kernels like decorative corn.
Harvest basket

Popcorn story
Tell kids that popcorn comes from a special kind of corn whose kernels pop in the heat.
