Hen Paper Squishy: a Chubby Chicken to Squeeze

Full-color paper squishy template of a round yellow hen with a red comb, brown wing and mirrored back, printable

Round as a ball, yellow feathers and a bright red comb โ€“ this hen brings good vibes to the craft table. As a paper squishy she turns wonderfully soft and goes great with the egg carton and chick from the same set. A rewarding shape for younger crafters, too, thanks to her simple round outline.

What's in the PDFs

There are two separate 2-page PDFs: the color version and the coloring version. Page 1 has the large hen with a front and back (about 3.5 inches tall), page 2 has six mini hens (about 1.5 inches tall), each with its own back. The back is drawn mirrored so the tail feathers and outline line up.

๐Ÿ“„ Whatโ€™s on the Pages

Page 1: Hen
Front and back plus the four-step instructions โ€“ in color or to color, depending on the PDF.
Page 2: Mini hens
Six little hens, each as a front-and-back pair.

How to make the hen

1
Print at actual size (100%) and color comb, beak and feet if you're using the coloring page.
2
Cut out front and back along the white border โ€“ that border becomes the gluing edge.
3
Cover both pieces smoothly with wide packing tape or laminate them.
4
Turn the back over, line it up under the hen and tape the border all around, leaving about 1 inch open at the bottom.
5
Stuff with fiberfill, yarn or shredded paper through the gap and tape it shut.

Safety: Stuffing, tape and small parts are not for children under 3.

๐Ÿ’ก Tips

  • The hen has hardly any tight corners, so she's a great first project for beginner cutters.
  • Color first, tape second: crayons and pencils won't stick to the slick tape.
  • Fiberfill and tape are small parts โ€“ not for kids under 3.
  • For a chicken yard, print the mini page on slightly heavier paper and keep the minis in a little box.

What kids practice

Because the back is mirrored, kids get a hands-on feel for what โ€œmirror imageโ€ means. The round shape builds smooth cutting. And there's a free chicken fact: a good laying hen lays an egg almost every day.

๐Ÿ”„ Variations & Ideas

Color a breed
Make the coloring version look like a real breed: white, reddish brown or black-and-white speckled.
Hen on a nest
Set the hen in a nest of paper strips and add the mini eggs from the egg carton squishy.
Chicken yard mobile
Hang the six minis on strings from a twig.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why is the back flipped?
When you stack the two pieces, they face in opposite directions. So the back is drawn mirrored, and the tail feathers and comb line up exactly.

Is it a hen or a rooster?
It's a hen with a small red comb and wattle. A rooster would have a bigger comb and long, colorful tail feathers.

How many mini hens do I get?
Six per PDF โ€“ six in color in the color version, six to color in the coloring version.

Is the download free?
Yes, all templates on PureSketchy are 100% free for personal, preschool and classroom use โ€“ no sign-up needed.
