Fun Facts About Therizinosaurus
Therizinosaurus had the longest claws of any known animal: the claw bones alone were about 20 inches long! Its name means “scythe lizard.” It lived in the late Cretaceous period, about 70 million years ago, in what is now Mongolia. Even though it was related to meat-eaters, it was most likely a plant-eater – its claws probably helped it pull branches closer. When the first claws were found in 1948, scientists thought they belonged to a giant turtle!
