Fun Facts About Maiasaura
Maiasaura means “good mother lizard.” It lived in the late Cretaceous period, about 77 to 76 million years ago, in what is now Montana. In 1978, scientists discovered a whole nesting colony there: lots of nests, eggshells, and babies. The finds suggest the young stayed in the nest for a while and were cared for by their parents – that was huge news! A single nest often held many more eggs than our picture shows. And a tiny piece of Maiasaura bone even traveled to space in 1985. It’s Montana’s official state fossil.
Fun Ideas for Your Finished Maiasaura
Decorate the three eggs like Easter eggs with dots, stripes, and zigzags. Add a note like “For the best mom ever.” Or turn a paper plate and paper scraps into a real dino nest.
