What Were Stegosaurus Plates For?

The big back plates of Stegosaurus weren’t attached to its skeleton – they were set into its skin. They stood in two slightly staggered rows along its back. The biggest plates were about 2 feet tall. What were they for? Most scientists think they were for showing off and recognizing others of their kind. Blood vessels ran through the plates, so they may also have helped control body temperature. Nobody knows what color they were – but there definitely weren’t any hearts or stars on them!
