📄 What’s on the Pages

Page 1: Card, eggshell, and bonus chick
A fold-over card with a chick and message lines, the top eggshell marked for the fastener, and a bonus chick.

How to make the card

1
Print the page on A4 or US Letter at 100% (Actual size), cut out the card, and fold it in half.
2
Cut out the top eggshell.
3
Poke a hole through the gray dot on the shell and the gray dot on the card with a pin (grown-ups).
4
Attach the shell with a brass paper fastener and swivel it over the chick.
5
Write your message – when the shell swings open, the chick hatches.

Safety: Stuffing, tape and small parts are not for children under 3.

💡 Tips

  • Heavy cardstock (around 110 lb) makes the card sturdy and the shell turns smoothly.
  • Let a grown-up poke the holes with a pin or awl.
  • Flatten the fastener's legs on the back and cover them with a bit of tape.
  • Slip the bonus chick into the envelope as a little surprise.

What kids practice

Cutting the zigzag edge and attaching the fastener build fine motor skills. Kids see how a pivot point works and can write their own short greetings. It's also a nice way to share that a chick grows in its egg for about 21 days before it hatches.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What's a brass paper fastener?
A small pin with two legs that you push through paper and spread open on the back, so the eggshell can still turn.

Can I make it without a fastener?
Yes – tape the shell at the top like a flap. Then it lifts up instead of swiveling.

What's the bonus chick for?
The little chick in an egg is an extra cutout, for example as a surprise inside the card or envelope.

Is the download free?
Yes, all templates on PureSketchy are 100% free for personal, preschool and classroom use – no sign-up needed.

Is there a German version?
Yes! You can find the German version here: Klappkarte Küken.
