DIY paper squishy: guide and tips

Print the paper squishy template on regular US Letter printer paper and cut out both pieces, leaving a white border all around. Cover the front and back with wide clear tape or laminating sheets so the paper turns sturdy and shiny. You do not need a laminator, tape works perfectly. It is most fun when you build together and compare your finished squishies afterwards.

Lay the two pieces on top of each other and tape the edge shut all the way around. Leave about 1 inch open at the bottom, fill with cotton, yarn or paper scraps, and do not stuff too tightly. Then tape the opening closed. Kid-tested: taping the edge and using yarn as stuffing works best.

For a printable squishy to color, use page 2 of the PDF and design your own face. Never use real food as stuffing. Stuffing and tape are not suitable for children under 3, so little ones should only build with a grown-up nearby. Cut out a little generously, because the white border gives the edge a firm hold later.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best stuffing for a paper squishy?
Yarn and cotton work best because they stay soft and squish nicely. Paper scraps work too, but they feel firmer.

Why should I tape the edge shut?
The tape holds both sides together and keeps the edge sturdy so the stuffing stays inside. Kids tested it and it works great.

Do I have to laminate the template?
No, wide clear tape is plenty. Laminating sheets are just an option if you already have them at home.
