What's in the PDF

The color PDF has 7 pages: instructions, three pages of card fronts, and three matching pages of answer backs. There are 24 riddle cards with three clues each (worth 3, 2, and 1 point) and an animal sound hint, plus 3 blank cards for your own riddles. The backs are mirrored so they line up when you print double-sided. The coloring PDF has the same cards in black and white.

How to play

1
Print fronts and backs double-sided (flip on the long edge) and cut out the cards.
2
No duplex printer? Cut out both sides and glue them back to back.
3
One player is the riddle master, draws a card, and reads clue 1 without peeking at the answer.
4
If nobody guesses, read clue 2, then clue 3 – and at the very end, the riddle master makes the animal sound.
5
Whoever guesses right collects the points and becomes the next riddle master.

Points and variations

1
Guess after clue 1 for 3 points, after clue 2 for 2 points, or after clue 3 for 1 point.
2
Whoever guesses right becomes the next riddle master.
3
When all cards are played, the player with the most points wins – corn kernels or beans make great counters.
4
For younger kids: start with the animal sound, or read all three clues and guess together.
5
The answer side also works as a picture card to point at.

πŸ’‘ Tips

  • Slightly heavier paper (65 lb cardstock) keeps the answer from showing through.
  • Do a test print first to check that the fronts and backs line up.
  • Kids can write riddles about their favorite animal on the blank cards and draw the answer.
  • For circle time, 5–6 cards per round is plenty.

What kids learn

Every clue is true – kids find out, for example, that barn owls screech instead of hooting and that hedgehogs shouldn't drink milk. Guessing means combining several clues and listening closely. Older kids can read the cards aloud themselves for extra reading practice.

πŸ”„ Variations & Ideas

Make your own riddle
Write your own animal riddle on one of the 3 blank cards and draw the answer on the back.
Act it out
Instead of the sound hint, the riddle master acts out the animal without words.
Point and pick
Lay the answer cards face up – who can point to the right animal first after the clues are read?
