Fun Facts About Dimetrodon

Surprise: Dimetrodon was not a dinosaur! It lived in the Permian period, about 295 to 272 million years ago, which is more than 40 million years before the first dinosaurs appeared. It grew up to about 10 feet long and ate other animals. It’s more closely related to mammals than to lizards or dinosaurs. Nobody is totally sure what the sail was for: maybe to warm up in the sun, maybe to show off. Fossils were found mostly in North America, and a relative was also discovered in Germany.

What to Do With Your Finished Dimetrodon

Glue colorful paper scraps or tissue paper onto the sail, and it glows like a mosaic. Make a paper timeline to show when Dimetrodon lived and when the dinosaurs did. Or play a quiz: who can say why it’s not a dino?
