Why Kids Love This Harvest Scene

Up front, the wide header has pointed dividers, followed by the cab with its steering wheel and the grain tank full of kernels. A long unloading auger sticks out to the side, and the tires have a bold zigzag tread. Uncut wheat stands on the left, while tire tracks show where the combine has already been. A cow, a sheep, two pigs and a hen hang out in front, with a barn, farmhouse and sun far behind.

How a Combine Harvester Works

A combine harvester gets its name because it combines several jobs into one machine. The header in front cuts the stalks, then inside the machine the kernels are knocked loose and separated from the straw. The grain collects in the grain tank, while the straw drops back onto the field. When the tank is full, the unloading auger moves the grain into a trailer. Harvest happens in summer, when wheat, barley or rye is ripe and dry.

What to Do with Your Finished Combine

Glue real grains or rolled oats into the grain tank to show what the combine collects. In class, add it to a β€œFrom Field to Bread” poster and draw the rest of the journey to the bakery.
